U9-U16 players

Welcome to Thornleigh Thunder FC!

As a player or parent of a player in the Under 9 to Under 16 age groups, you may be familiar with the club, or you might be new to Thornleigh Thunder FC. This guide will help you get settled and understand some key details about the season ahead.

Club Information

Communication:
The club primarily communicates through the Thornleigh Thunder FC Facebook page. This is where you’ll find important updates, event notifications, and general information about the club. Make sure to check it regularly to stay in the loop!

Teams & Grading

How Does the Registration Process Work?
Parents should visit the club website and follow the registration instructions under the ‘Registration 2025’ tab. Once registered, and grading has been completed, the registrar will assign players to teams or grades based on age and skill level.

Grading:
The U9 to U16 teams are graded based on player ability. This process ensures that players compete in teams that are appropriately matched to their skill level. The aim is to create a fair and balanced competition while promoting player development.

  • Grading Day: Players will participate in a grading day (February) where coaches assess their skills. These assessments help form the teams for the upcoming season.
  • Team Allocations: After grading, players will be placed in a team according to their age and skill level. Some players may be placed in higher age groups or more competitive teams if they are deemed ready, while others may be placed in teams designed for developing players.

What Happens if a Friend Wants to Play Together?
While we try to accommodate requests to keep friends together, team allocations are primarily based on skill level to ensure fair play. If there are extenuating circumstances, please reach out to the registrar, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Team Composition:
The goal for team composition is to ensure balance across all teams. If a player is placed in a team that is different from their friend’s, this is to ensure a more competitive and fair environment for everyone.

Why Do Team Compositions Change?
Once grading is complete, teams are set for the season, but small changes may occur throughout the year. This could be due to player availability, injuries, or changes in team dynamics. Rest assured, these adjustments are made to keep teams balanced and competitive.

Training & Games

When Does Training Start?
Training for U9-U16 players generally begins in late March, just before the season kicks off. Exact dates and times will be available soon.

Where Do We Train?
Training is at Oakleigh Oval or Ruddock Park. The training schedule will be determined based on team needs and coaching availability.

Do We Train and Play During School Holidays?
Games typically do occur during school holidays, and training may continue depending on team schedules and coach availability. Please refer to the draws for confirmation.

What Are the Rules of Play?
The rules for U9-U16 teams are standard football rules but adjusted for age and skill level. You can find the full details on the NWSF website, but players can expect a competitive structure that encourages teamwork and skill development.

Where Can I Find the Season Draw?
Once the draw is finalised (typically early-March), the team managers will distribute it to players. The draw may change throughout the season, so it’s best to regularly check for updates on the NWSF website.

Managers & Coaches

What Training is Available for Coaches?
The club encourages all coaches to attend formal development programs run by the association, and the club will cover any associated costs. These sessions generally take place locally, at the start of the season. Coaches are also supported with regular communication and advice from the club’s coaching coordinator.

What Role Does the Manager Play?
The team manager is essential in facilitating communication between players, parents, and the club. Managers will assist the coach on game days, help with substitutions, and ensure the team has enough players. They also coordinate other team activities, such as rosters for BBQ duties, and field setup.

Working With Children Checks
All coaches, managers, and club officials are required to complete a Working With Children Check through Service NSW. This process is free and helps ensure the safety and welfare of all our players.

Parent Support & Involvement

How Can Parents Help?
Parents are a crucial part of the Thornleigh Thunder FC community! We rely on volunteer support for a range of activities, from assisting with team management to helping with field setup and working at BBQs.

Some of the ways parents can support the club include:

  • Club BBQ & Fundraising: Each parent is asked to help out once or twice a season with BBQ duties or fundraising initiatives.
  • Field Setup/Packing Down: Help set up and pack down fields for games and training.
  • Support During Games: Positive encouragement and cheering for all players, not just your child, helps to foster a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.

How Do We Encourage a Positive Atmosphere?
We encourage all parents, coaches, and players to celebrate effort and focus on positive feedback. Rather than focusing on specific plays or mistakes during a game, try comments like, “Great teamwork out there today!” or “Well done on your defence!” Always aim to be encouraging, and let the coach guide player development.

Key Dates

Presentation Day

At the end of the season, Thornleigh Thunder FC hosts a presentation day where players receive their team photos, trophies, and recognition for their efforts. It’s also a fun time for players and parents to come together and reflect on the season. There will be a BBQ, and players can enjoy a final kick-around before the season concludes.

Players & Equipment

What to Bring to Training
For training sessions, players will need a drink bottle, shin pads, boots, and a jumper for colder weather. It’s essential that all players wear the appropriate gear to ensure safety and comfort.

Training Shirts vs. Playing Shirts
Each player will receive a training shirt at the start of the season, which they can keep. Training shirts are worn during practice sessions. Playing shirts are provided for match days but are returned at the end of the season.

What Equipment Do Players Receive?
Managers will receive the team’s equipment, including a kit bag with balls, cones, bibs, and training shirts. New players will also receive shorts and socks. These items will be distributed during the first training sessions in March.
